Winter Pines Hat: Free Crochet Pattern

This cozy crochet slouchy beanie is made from size 4 acrylic yarn in a lustrous green. Crocheted from the bottom up, this hat is a fantastic quick make you can whip up in a weekend.
For this project, I used Furls Wander yarn in Arbor and a 5 mm crochet hook (Furls Streamline Galaxy in resin, a wonderful ergonomic hook with beautiful colors).

Pattern Notes
This pattern uses US crochet terms.
It can be helpful to use stitch markers to help keep count of the number of rows you have completed.

Instructions
To make the brim:
Row 1: Ch 7. Single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook, then sc in each of the remaining chains (6 scs)
Row 2: *Turn, ch one ( does not count as a stitch) sc blo in the first stitch and in each remaining stich.* Repeat from * to * 70 times (you will have 72 rows total).
Slip stitch ends of the first and last rows together, being careful not to twist the piece.
Cut yarn, weave in ends.
To make the hat body:
Attach yarn to the brim with a slip stitch. Beginning at one of the row ends, you will now work the shells stitch pattern in rounds.
Round 1: Ch 1(does not count as a st), sc in the first row end. Sc in the next 71 row ends. Slip stitch the last sc to the first sc to join the row together (72 sc).
Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as a stitch), 2 dc in first sc. *Skip 2 stitches, sc in next stitch. Skip the next 2 stitches, 5 dc in the next stitch. Repeat from * to * 10 times. Skip 2 stitches, sc in next stitch, Skip 2 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch, join with slip stitch to top of ch 3.
Round 3: Ch 1 ( does not count as a stitch), sc in first stitch. *Skip 2 stitches, 5 dc in next stitch Skip 2 stitches, sc in next stitch*. Repeat from * to * 10 times. Skip 2 sts, 5 dc in the next stitch, skip 2 sts, join with slip stitch to the first sc.
Repeat round 2 and 3 sixteen times. (The hat will be approximately 10 inches long, which is a more slouchy style. To make a shorter or longer hat, repeat rounds 2 and 3 until you reach the desired length.)
Fasten off, weave in loose ends.
Finishing:
Using a 12″ length of yarn, attach to top with a slip stitch. Using a yarn needle, weave in and out of top stitches and pull tight to cinch the top closed. Fasten off and weave in loose ends.
Finish edge of brim with slip stitches or single crochet if desired. (This will make the brim a little less elastic.)
