Oat Bran Beanie: Crochet a Stylish Beanie With This Free Child-Size Hat Pattern

Materials You Will Need:

Yarn: 1 skein Wool-ease Thick and Quick in color Wheat (86% Acrylic; 10% Wool; 4% Rayon) 6 oz (170 g), 106 yds (97 m)

Hook: 1 crochet hook size N 15 (10mm)

Scissors

Notes:

The Oat Bran Beanie is made with top down construction and is worked in joined rounds.

This pattern uses US crochet terms.

Available Sizes:

Baby – Toddler – Child

Finished Dimensions:

Baby size: 13” circumference, 5.5” height

Toddler size: 16” circumference, 6.5” height

Child size: 18” circumference, 7.5” height

Gauge:

4” (10 cm) = 7 stitches and 3 rows, unblocked

Special Stitches:

Single crochet in the third loop of a half double crochet: (When half double crochet stitches are worked, there is a “third” loop that is created in the back of the stitch – crocheting into this loop creates a unique knit look texture.)

Insert hook into the third loop of the hdc stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook.

Crocheting into the back loop only (blo): A crochet stitch will have two strands on the top that resemble a “v”. The strand that is closer to you is the front loop, and the strand that is further away is the back loop. To crochet in the back loop only, Insert your hook underneath the further strand and work the stitch as indicated in the pattern.

Notes:

This pattern treats the two or three chains at the beginning of each round (the turning chain) as the first stitch.

Instructions

Baby Size:

Ch 4 and join with a sl st to the first ch to form a ring. 

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as a stitch here and throughout), 11 dcs in the ring. Join with sl st to top of ch 3. 12 dcs

Round 2: Ch 3, dc in the first st, 2 dcs blo in each of the next 4 sts, 1 dc blo in the next st, 2 dcs blo in the next 5 sts, 1 dc blo in the last st. Join. 22 dcs

Round 3: Ch 3, dc in the first st, 1 dc blo in each of the next 10 sts, 2 dcs blo in the next st, 1 dc blo in each of the next 10 sts. Join. 24 dcs

Round 4: Ch 3, dc in the first st, dc blo in each of the next 11 sts, 2 dcs blo in the next st, dc blo in next 11 sts. Join. 26 sts 

Round 5: Ch 2, sk the first st, 1 hdc blo in the next 25 sts. Join. 26 hdcs

Round 6: Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), sc in the third loop of the first hdc st, sc in the third loop of the next 25 hdcs. Join. 26 hdcs 

Fasten off, weave in all loose ends. 

Toddler Size:

Ch 4 and join with a sl st to the first ch to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as a stitch here and throughout), 11 dcs in the ring. Join with sl st to top of ch 3. 12 dcs

Round 2: Ch 3, dc into the first st, 2 dcs blo in each of the next 11 sts. Join. 24 dcs

Round 3: Ch 3, dc in the first st, 1 dc blo in each of the next 5 sts, *2 dcs blo in the next st, 1 dc blo in each of the next 5 sts, repeat  from * 2 times. Join. 28 dcs

Round 4: Ch 3, sk the first st, dc blo in each of the next 27 sts, join. 28 dcs

Round 5: Ch 3, dc in the first st, dc blo in each of the next 13 sts, 2 dc blo in the next st, 1 dc blo in each of the next 13 sts. Join. 30 dcs

Round 6: Ch 2, sk the first st, 1 hdc blo in each of the next 29 sts. Join. 30 hdcs

Round 7: Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), sc in the third loop of the first hdc, sc in the third loop of the next 29 hdcs. Join. 30 scs 

Fasten off, weave in all loose ends.

Child Size:

Ch 4 and join with a sl st to the first ch to form a ring. 

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as a stitch here and throughout), 11 dcs in the ring. Join with sl st to top of ch 3. 12 dcs.

Round 2: Ch 3, dc in the first st, 2 dcs blo in each of the next 11 sts. Join. 24 dcs

Round 3: Ch 3, dc in the first st, 1 dc blo in each of the next 5 sts, *2 dcs blo in the next st, 1 dc blo in each of the next 5 sts, repeat from * 2 times. Join. 28 dcs

Round 4: Ch 3, dc in the first st, 1 dc blo in each of the next 6 sts, *2 dc blo in the next st, 1 dc blo into each of the next 6 sts, repeat from * 2 times. Join. 32 dcs

Round 5: Repeat round 4.

Round 6: Ch 2 (counts as the first stitch), sk the first st, 1 hdc blo in each of the next 31 sts. Join. 32 hdcs

Round 7: Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), sc in the third loop of the first hdc, sc in the third loop of the next 31 hdcs around. Join. 32 scs 

Fasten off, weave in all loose ends.
