Oat Bran Beanie: Crochet a Stylish Beanie With This Free Child-Size Hat Pattern

Are you looking for a fun and stylish way to keep your little one’s head warm this winter? Look no further! This free crochet pattern is here to save the day. With just a few simple crochet stitches, you’ll have a trendy and cozy beanie that your child will love. This quick and easy crochet beanie is made with extra thick bulky size yarn.

And don’t worry, you don’t need to be an expert at crochet to tackle this project. The step-by-step instructions will guide you through the process, ensuring that you create a beautiful finished product.

To make this hat, I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, which has a wonderful stretchy quality. You can substitute another size 6 or super bulky weight yarn, but be sure to check your gauge carefully. Use a hook one size smaller or larger if needed.

Available Sizes:

Baby – Toddler – Child

Finished Dimensions:

Baby size: 13” circumference, 5.5” height

Toddler size: 16” circumference, 6.5” height

Child size: 18” circumference, 7.5” height

Gauge:

4” (10 cm) = 7 stitches and 3 rows, unblocked

Special Stitches:

Single crochet in the third loop of a half double crochet: (When half double crochet stitches are worked, there is a “third” loop that is created in the back of the stitch – crocheting into this loop creates a unique knit look texture.)

Insert hook into the third loop of the hdc stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook.

Crocheting into the back loop only (blo): A crochet stitch will have two strands on the top that resemble a “v”. The strand that is closer to you is the front loop, and the strand that is further away is the back loop. To crochet in the back loop only, Insert your hook underneath the further strand and work the stitch as indicated in the pattern.

Notes:

This pattern treats the two or three chains at the beginning of each round (the turning chain) as the first stitch. Don’t put a double or half double crochet into the very first stitch of the row below, instead go to the very next stitch. At the end of the round, join with a slip stitch into the top of the turning chain.

(As an alternative, you can ignore the turning chains and put a double or half double crochet into the very first stitch of the previous round. If you choose this approach, be sure not to crochet into the turning chain at the end of each round, and don’t count the turning chains when you are counting your stitches.)

Abbreviations:

blo – back loop only

ch – chain

dc – double crochet

hdc – half double crochet

sc – single crochet

  1. Would love to gift this to an expectant mom with a matching baby blanket. Do you have a blanket pattern that would coordinate with this oat bran beanie? Thanks!!
