The Triple Tote

Materials:

2 skeins of Lily Sugar ‘n Cream (2.5 oz / 70.9 g; 120 yds / 109 m) 100% cotton, size 4 / medium

crochet hook – 5 mm (US H/8)

yarn needle 

scissors

stitch markers

Gauge:

4 ” (10 cm) = 12 stitches and 6 rows of double crochet, unblocked

Finished dimensions:

10.5” W x 13.5” L x 2” D (unblocked) 

Pattern Notes:

This pattern uses US crochet terms. 

The bag begins with an oval base of double crochet stitches, then is worked in joined, turned rounds.

When working into the starting chain for the bag base, be sure to choose one side of the chain to crochet into for each side (for example, crochet into the third loop, or “back bump” of the chain on the first pass, and then into the top two loops, or the “v” on the return pass).

Blocking is optional, but will give the finished bag a more defined shape, and may increase the dimensions by an extra half inch. 

Crochet stitches will have a tendency to stretch, especially lengthwise, and your bag while in use may stretch by an extra half inch to an inch.

Abbreviations:

ch = chain

dc = double crochet

sc = single crochet

sl st = slip stitch

st = stitch

tr = treble crochet

Instructions

Base:

1.) Join yarn to crochet hook with a slip knot, leaving a long tail. Chain 29.

2.) Place 2 double crochet stitches in the fourth chain from the hook. (The first 3 chains will count as the first double crochet stitch.)

3.) Place 1 double crochet in each of the next 24 chains 

4.) Place 6 double crochets in the last chain.

5.) Now you will continue on the other side of the starting chain. Place 1 double crochet in each of the next 24 chains.

6.) Place 3 double crochets in the last chain, then join with a slip stitch. (There will now be a total of 60 double crochets in the first round).

Body: 

Round 1: Turn, ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), sc in first dc, sc in each dc around, join to the first sc with a sl st (60 sc). 

Round 2: Turn, ch 3 (does not count as a stitch), tr in the first sc and in each sc around, join with a sl st (60 tr). 

Rounds 3 – 18: Repeat rounds 1 and 2

Round 19 (this round will begin the handles): Turn, ch1 (does not count as a stitch), sc in the first tr, sc in the next 9 tr. Ch 60, skip the next 10 tr, sc in the next tr. Sc in the next 19 tr. Ch 60, skip the next 10 tr, sc in the next tr. Sc in the next 9 tr, join with a sl st (160 stitches).

Round 20: Turn, ch 3 (does not count as a stitch), tr in the first sc, 1 tr in each sc and ch around, join with a sl st (160 sts). 

Round 21: Sl st in each tr around, join with a sl st. (160 sts).

Fasten off and weave in loose ends. Block to shape if desired.
