Lustrous Winter Cowl – Free Crochet Pattern

Get ready to make a super cozy cowl (or infinity scarf) that’s perfect for those chilly days! This easy and stylish crochet pattern uses Wander Acrylic Yarn from Furls, which is not only soft and shiny, but also super durable — ideal for your wardrobe.

And to make the experience of crocheting this piece even better, I used the Streamline ergonomic crochet hook from Furls. Using an ergonomic hook can reduce fatigue and tension when you are crocheting. I was given a complimentary metal Streamline hook by Furls for this project, but I’ve been a fan of Furls hooks for years. I always loved their wooden ergonomic hooks and I was impressed with the aluminum version of their Streamline crochet hook. The smooth metal makes the stitching fast and easy.

Read on for the pattern. You’ll love wrapping yourself in the comfort and handmade style of this piece.

Pattern Notes

This pattern uses US crochet terms.

This cowl is constructed with joined rounds, making a seamless infinity scarf.

Use stitch markers to help keep track of the first and last stitch in the row you are working on; stitch markers can also help you to count the number of rows you have completed.

Abbreviations

ch = chain

ch sp = chain space

hdc3tog = half double crochet three together

sc = single crochet

sk = skip

sl st = slip stitch

st = stitch

Special Stitches

Hdc3tog (half double crochet 3 together): Yarn over, insert hook in the indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop 3 times (there will now be 7 loops on the hook), yarn over and draw through all 7 loops on the hook.

Puff stitch: the puff stitch consists of a Hdc3tog (half double crochet 3 together) all in the same stitch.

The first puff stitch of each round consists of a starting chain plus a hdc3tog: chain 1, then hdc3tog, all in the same stitch.

Row 2: Turn, ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), puff stitch in the first sc, *ch1, skip the next sc, puff stitch in the next sc,* repeat until 1 sc remains, then ch1, skip 1 sc, join with a sl st to the top of the first puff stitch.

Row 3: Turn, ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), sc in the first chain space, *ch 1, skip the next puff stitch, sc in the next chain space* repeat until 1 stitch remains, then ch 1, skip 1 puff stitch, and slip stitch into the top of the first sc.

Row 4: Turn, Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), puff stitch in the first chain space. *Ch 1, skip the next sc, puff stitch in the next chain space,* repeat until one stitch remains, then ch1, skip 1 sc, join with a sl st to the top of the first puff stitch.
